BookHookup Review: The Whisper and The Runaway

The Whisper and The Runaway by J.M. Tangard is cleverly written and immediately engaging. It held my interest from the start, pulling me into a layered mystery set against a gritty, well-realized backdrop.

Marley is a strong young protagonist whose growth throughout the story feels natural and earned. Watching her navigate danger, uncertainty, and her own fear adds emotional depth to the fast-moving plot.

One of the highlights for me was the subtle tie-in to The Shadow. By the time I was hearing it on the radio, the episodes were already reruns, a glimpse into a bygone era, but my dad knew exactly where to find it on the dial during those drives home. That memory added a nostalgic layer that really resonated.

It also gives the storyline a sense of promise for the future. That connection hints at a larger framework behind the scenes, suggesting there’s more to uncover as the series continues. It adds depth without overwhelming the current story and makes me curious to see where it goes next.

The worldbuilding, particularly the underground network of information and quiet observers, lays a strong foundation for what promises to be an entertaining series. The noir tone, combined with realistic tradecraft and moral ambiguity, makes this a compelling and satisfying read.

BookHookup Content Note
