Some stories pull you in with action, others with atmosphere, but Continuum by Gregory Rizzi does both while delivering a deeply human, character‑driven tale of redemption. This is one of those rare sci‑fi novels where the emotional arc is just as gripping as the danger on the page. I loved everything about this book, and it’s an easy contender for my top ten reads this year.
About the Book
Lt. Jakob Daedalus serves in the elite Praetorian Guard within the walled city of Rhea on the alien planet Ares. When an assassination attempt goes wrong, Jakob is stripped of his Scorpion band and removed from duty, a devastating blow for an orphan who was raised by the very man he failed to protect. Ares is home to strange creatures, breathtaking landscapes, and the mysterious Creators, individuals whose powerful gifts shape both beauty and destruction across the planet. As Jakob and DEC venture deeper into the Wilderness, they face danger, discovery, and truths that challenge everything Jakob has ever believed.

Continuum is a standout example of character‑driven science fiction done right. Jakob Daedalus is a flawed, complex protagonist whose mistakes, doubts, and determination make him instantly compelling. His fall from the Praetorian Guard sets the emotional tone of the story; he's a young soldier desperate to redeem himself, not through glory, but through understanding, courage, and growth.
His relationship with DEC is one of my favorite elements of the book. DEC is both protector and partner, a robot with surprising depth, and even turns into a motorcycle, a unique twist that adds cinematic flair. Their dynamic evolves through shared danger, quiet moments, and hard‑won trust. Watching Jakob learn from DEC, and DEC learn from Jakob, creates a bond that anchors the entire story.
Rizzi’s worldbuilding is exceptional. The alien planet Ares is vividly imagined, sometimes beautiful, sometimes brutal. The Wilderness feels alive, filled with strange wildlife, breathtaking vistas, and remnants of the Creators’ powers. The two cities, Rhea and its counterpart, are futuristic and visually striking. I could easily see this world on film.
The Creators themselves add originality and atmosphere. Their abilities shape the land in ways that are both awe‑inspiring and dangerous, and their presence deepens the story’s themes of identity, survival, and the cost of power.
Thematically, Continuum shines. It explores prejudice, xenophobia, and the slow, powerful shift that happens when propaganda gives way to personhood. The bitter war between the two groups sets the stage, but the real heart of the story lies in one young man's efforts to do the right thing.
The pacing is fast, intense action balanced with breath‑catching pauses, and I never wanted to put it down. The ending is hopeful, marked by discovery and new possibilities, and it left me eager for more.
This is imaginative, heartfelt science fiction with emotional depth, strong character development, and a world worth getting lost in.
