The Sun Casts No Shadow

Note to Book HookUp Readers: A dark, surreal descent into metaphysical noir — not a clean read

Some stories don’t simply unfold, they distort, unsettle, and pull you into a world where reality bends. The Sun Casts No Shadow is one of those books. Set in a rotting, walled City where daylight is only a memory, this neo‑noir descent into metaphysical horror is dark, surreal, and intentionally disorienting. While I can appreciate the craft and atmosphere, this book falls outside my clean‑fiction lane, and readers of Book HookUp should approach it with that in mind.

The Sun Casts No Shadow

About the Book

In The Sun Casts No Shadow, pickpocket Wellington Thorneycroft drifts through life in a decaying City governed by simple rules: take what you can, feel nothing, and never look too closely at the shadows. His existence shifts when a ghostly woman named Lilith appears — silent, radiant, and impossible — promising they will escape together.

What follows is an episodic, fever‑dream journey through brothels, back alleys, and drug‑blurred encounters. Wellington’s perceptions are altered by alcohol, narcotics, and emotional detachment, making him an unreliable narrator whose experiences feel both vivid and questionable. Lilith’s role is central and deeply ambiguous. She uses seduction and sexual manipulation to pull him deeper into her orbit, leaving the reader unsure whether she is a guide, a trap, or something far more metaphysical.

The pacing builds steadily toward a Twilight Zone–quality ending that fits the story’s surreal, metaphysical tone.

Book HookUp Book Review: The Sun Casts No Shadow

The Sun Casts No Shadow by Mark Richardson is a bleak, atmospheric noir that thrives on ambiguity. The episodic structure gives the narrative a dreamlike rhythm, each encounter feeling disconnected yet thematically linked. The City itself becomes a character: poisoned, claustrophobic, and alive with menace.

Wellington’s unreliable narration is one of the book’s strongest elements. His altered perceptions make him a questionable guide, yet his voice remains compelling. You’re inside his head, but you’re never quite sure you should trust what you see there.

Lilith’s presence adds tension and danger. Her manipulation,  including sexual manipulation, shapes the story’s tone and contributes to the oppressive atmosphere. As the narrative progresses, the question of whether she is friend or foe becomes central to the book’s suspense.

The ending delivers a satisfying metaphysical twist, reminiscent of classic Twilight Zone storytelling.
