Some stories capture your attention from the first chapter. Others capture your heart. Prince John's Lost Love managed to do both. With its fairy-tale atmosphere, compelling mystery, lovable characters, and steady sense of adventure, this romantic fantasy kept me completely invested from beginning to end. I genuinely didn't want to put it down.
About the Book
Prince John's Lost Love by Jo Cook is a clean romantic fantasy set in the world of Eoroe on the continent of Bryten.
Seventeen years ago, Lady Ceci, the young daughter of the Duke of Wallingford, disappeared without a trace. Her family never stopped loving her, but as the years passed, every search ended in disappointment. Prince John, her childhood friend, refuses to give up hope. Determined to uncover what happened to the missing girl, he launches a new search that follows a trail of long-missed clues across kingdoms.
But if they find Ceci, will she remember who she truly is?
Book HookUp Book Review: Prince John's Lost Love
I loved everything about this book.
The story begins with a mystery that has remained unsolved for seventeen years. Lady Ceci vanished when she was only five years old, leaving behind devastated family members and friends. Her older brothers were still children when she disappeared, along with their childhood companion, Prince John. They all carry a sense of grief and guilt into adulthood. That emotional foundation immediately gave weight to the story and made me care about the outcome.
What hooked me was the investigation itself. Prince John's renewed search begins uncovering clues that everyone else missed. Each discovery leads to another, renewing hope that Ceci might still be alive. The pacing was excellent. Just as hope rises, new obstacles appear, creating a wonderful balance of anticipation and uncertainty. A particularly memorable clue comes from a witness who, as a child, remembers seeing a little girl with fair hair peeking out from beneath a wagon tarp many years earlier. From that point on, I was completely invested.
Prince John is an outstanding hero. He is sincere, honorable, and exactly the kind of future ruler you want leading a kingdom. His devotion to finding Ceci never feels forced. Instead, it grows naturally from years of friendship, loyalty, and genuine concern. Along with Ceci's brothers, he forms a wonderful band of noble searchers that is easy to root for.
When Ceci is finally found, the story takes another fascinating turn. She doesn't remember who she is and believes herself to be a tinker's daughter. I found myself wanting not only for the group to find her, but also for her memories to return. Even then, the journey is far from over. Danger looms as sinister forces pursue them, adding tension and excitement all the way to the final pages.
The world of Eoroe and Bryten is both immersive and enchanting. The story has a fairy-tale quality that reminded me somewhat of Cinderella, though the plot itself is very different. There is something magical about a prince searching for the childhood friend he never forgot, and that feeling permeates the entire story.
The characters are easily the book's greatest strength. Their loyalty, perseverance, hope, and affection for one another make every chapter meaningful. I cared deeply about the outcome and remained invested in Prince John's quest until the very end.
For me, Prince John's Lost Love by Jo Cook checked every box. If you enjoy clean romantic fantasy, fairy-tale-inspired stories, adventurous quests, lost princess narratives, and memorable characters, you'll want to add this one to your reading list.
