Fast paced action for Middle Schoolers complete with monsters, evil witch, and a magical land

The Lucky Diamond by Valinora Troy is book 1 in a Middle Grade magical fantasy quest series. It delivers fast paced, unpredictable action, complete with monsters, an evil witch, and the stunning, magical land of Nivram wrought with danger.

The Lucky Diamond

About The Lucky Diamond

The story centers around five orphaned children who eke out an existence, surviving in hiding from the authorities in Lowdar. Outside the gates of Lowdar is the threat of the Great Forest, where monsters lurk, ready to kill. The oldest of the orphans is Yvonne, who does her best to keep her younger siblings, Susan, Vicky, Cathy and Alan, safe. Each child cherishes a gift left to them by their parents, except for Alan, who not only lost his gift but can’t recall what it is.

The Lucky Diamond opens as dusk settles on Lowdar. Cathy’s twin brother plays a game with the other boys in the street. The last through the gate is a colonel from the Nivram National Army. The bell tolls, and the gate clangs shut, signaling that curfew is about to start. Cathy worries as she waits for her sister, Vicky. The authorities take her brother into custody with threats of being thrown into the Great Forest.

This day changes the lives of all five siblings when Cathy finds a three-inch diamond on the way home. But it is no ordinary diamond. It’s a shape-changing species who introduces itself as Princess of the Ancient Order of Diamonds—Lucky.

The children escape Lowdar to return Lucky to her home. Along the way they meet challenges at every turn, and the adventure becomes one of self-discovery for each of them. During the journey, the five children are unaccompanied by adults, meet magical creatures, and learn valuable lessons. But the story is totally different. In many ways, this story has a Chroniclesof Narnia feel but also reminds me of the Hogwart's at times.

Book Review: The Lucky Diamond

The Lucky Diamond is a fast paced imaginative read and a perfect choice for Middle School readers who enjoy fantasy with plenty of action. Though I must give parents a heads up that the story is charming, but does have some scary characters, so if you have a child troubled by monsters, they might not be ready for this book. I also recommend this entertaining read to older readers who appreciate magical fantasy like Harry Potter or the Chronicles of Narnia. I had one unresolved question, but I’m about to start reading Revenge of Queen Rose (The Lucky Diamond series book 2), and hope to have it answered there. While the world building depicted a believable world, I thought the plot felt rushed at times and could be more developed. However, with that said, the story flowed well, never stalled, and held my interest. I am starting book 2 and looking forward to it.

Romance with a fresh air feel of farm life & falling in love

The Hired Hand by Diane Ziomek is book one in a box set series. It features Rachel, a twenty-six-year-old widow working to keep her dream alive on the farm she and her husband built from the ground up. But she can’t do it alone. With the work of haying season more than she can handle, she places an ad for a hired hand. When Chad answers her help wanted ad, he checks all the boxes on her list. He knows his stuff, from caring for the animals to how to operate the equipment. As a bonus, he is handsome and polite, and they work well together. When their attraction becomes obvious, Rachel lets her guard down. As perfect as it all seems, she questions whether it is love or her desires pulling her along. All seems ideal as the budding romance heads to something more serious. Then unexpected complications from the past catch up with them to snuff out the flame.

BookHookup Review: The Hired Hand

The Hired Hand delivers an absorbing plot that keeps the pages turning with flawless worldbuilding drawing you into that fresh air feel of farm life, falling in love, and characters that are likable and believable. I wish the author had further developed the storyline with more subplots, but it did supply a romantic focus throughline that hooked me.

I recommend this engaging romance to readers of Chic Lit, contemporary romance, second-chance romance, or a good story with a strong female protagonist. BUT I say all this with one caveat. This book does contain mature content. Think PG13.

About Author Diane Ziomek

Diane Ziomek was born in 1968 and spent most of her childhood on the family farm. She loved the outdoors and spent as much time outside as she could; choosing it over television more often than not. Her love of reading also came at an early age.

Her passion for reading turned to dreams of writing, and in 2010 she began writing online. After dreaming about being a writer for at least two decades she began researching her options and found self-publishing was the most feasible option for her.

In October 2012, Diane stepped out of her comfort zone of nonfiction and registered for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and wrote a 50,000+ word novel in the month of November. She has also authored a number of nonfiction titles, which center around helping others follow their passions and achieve their dreams. These titles are mainly based on freelance writing, self-publishing and creating a business from a hobby.

In early 2018 she decided to expand on her fiction journey, and has written The Pipestone Creek Romance Series. Her new romance series (Mount Brooksby Romance Series) is underway.

She does not take the easy way out of anything, and as her late father used to say "If there's a hard way to do something, Diane will find it."

Diane became a widow in May 2020 and made some life changes; one of which was moving from the home her and her husband shared. She bought an acreage in the summer of 2022 and is enjoying being a grandma. She treasures family time and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Christian fiction that reads like the Apostle Paul's memoir

World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God's Chosen Messenger by Louis McCall, while fiction, is written like the Apostle Paul’s memoir. Its conversational tone and easy-to-read format filled with Paul’s words from the Bible are paired with interesting historic tidbits garnered from reliable sources regarding times and places visited on his missionary journeys. I think one of the things that makes this account come to life is McCall’s extensive travel in the region. His experiential knowledge adds the magic that comes from firsthand familiarity.

World Upside Down Book Reivew

With all that said, while the book reads like a biographical account, it is not. It is fictional but “based on a true story.” As a person who has studied the Bible for more than 40 years, I gained new historical insights into what Paul experienced on his travels and found no errors in things attributed to Paul’s words.

I recommend World Upside Down: The Life of Paul, God's Chosen Messenger for readers who enjoy biblical history and those interested in learning more about the life of the Apostle Paul and his journeys. I’m happy to give this book 5-stars. Other books by McCall include: He Chose the Glory: The Life and Legacy of Obed-Edom, and The Epic of God.

Author Louis McCall

About Author Louis McCall

Louis McCall was born in Chicago, Illinois and attended Northwestern University where he received a Ph.D. Later, he also attended the National War College of the National Defense University. Louis was an Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University prior to a 36-year career in the U.S. Department of State, first as a Foreign Service officer and then as a foreign affairs Civil Service employee where he served as Consul General in Florence, Italy, Chargé d’Affaires in Brunei, U.S. Representative to the Republic of San Marino, and Assistant Inspector General. He lived in or worked in, at least temporarily, 60 countries on six continents. Whether in academia or as a diplomat, Louis found opportunities to live his faith, including part-time ministry of the good news in word and in song, including co-laboring with missionaries, national church leaders, and the underground church. When ministering early in his diplomatic career from the pulpit of a great church in Calcutta, India, Louis said to those in attendance that he had determined not to be ashamed of the gospel of Christ. That has been a commitment he has endeavored to keep over the years. In his final two years at the Department of State he organized and led the National Day of Prayer observances in the Department.

Now, in his new career as an author, he has the pleasure of greater freedom in sharing what God has placed in his heart. Louis is active simultaneously in two churches in Washington, D.C. One is a multi-site non-denominational church, where he is an elder, and the other a Catholic church where he is a regular cantor, though not a Catholic himself. He has managed this with the blessing and full knowledge of pastors and priests. This has been an outgrowth of his early association with a mixed protestant-Catholic charismatic house-based worship group, his association with the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta, his Catholic charismatic wife, and guest ministry in churches and bible schools of various denominations while living in or working in other countries.

Imaginative approach to storytelling injects childlike magic into everyday life

Ella’s Dance Debut brings a magical story of a young girl’s life as a dancer, but Ella is not that girl. It is her umbrella, “Ella.” This imaginative story surrounds Ella the umbrella's life, riding the bus, going to dance classes, and getting ready for Ashton's big recital. Ella loves music and motion as much as Ashton does. When Ella learns that umbrellas will be used by the dancers, she is so excited, but things don’t go exactly as planned. For those who have read other books in this series, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Book Review by Donna

Book Review: Ella's Dance Debut

This book’s imaginative approach to storytelling injects childlike magic into an everyday scenario by telling it from an umbrella’s point of view. The whimsical, colorful illustrations by Emilia Ruminska not only bring the story to life but shine with the love of dance. With Ella’s Dance Debut, Once Upon a Dance delivers another interactive, entertaining tale for young children and early readers as Ballerina Konora joins in the story with photos that encourage kids to act out movements in the story. I love this concept.

This interaction with the story encourages imaginative play by an award-winning ballet teacher! I give this book five stars. While it is recommended for young children interested in dance as it features ballet terms and steps, I think this story will appeal to young children who love music, and those who love to pretend even if they are not involved in dance.
