About the Book: Moon Over Marisol: The Ghost Town Forest

Moon Over Marisol: The Ghost Town Forest begins beneath a rising full moon and the weight of nine hundred years of cosmic community service.

Marisol is a 900-year-old Latina witch who doesn’t get to choose her assignments. This time, she lands in a ghost town in a dead desert with one directive carved in moonlight: replant the forest that once stood there.

The soil refuses to hold life. The seeds are hidden somewhere only a cursed raven with broken wings can find them. The ghosts won’t stop talking. And the ghost of a schoolteacher is determined to make sure nothing in this town ever changes.

What unfolds is a magical tale layered with humor, suspense, and surprising depth.

BookHookup Review: Moon Over Marisol: The Ghost Town Forest

I loved everything about this book.

Moon Over Marisol: The Ghost Town Forest by Dennis Santaniello reads like a fresh fairytale — imaginative, suspenseful, and threaded with humor that feels both clever and natural. From the first page, the voice drew me in. Marisol’s perspective, wise, slightly exasperated, yet deeply compassionate. It anchors the story even as ghosts chatter and ravens carry curses.

The pacing makes it a true page-turner. Every obstacle feels meaningful: the barren soil, the hidden seeds, the broken-winged raven, and the resistance of a town frozen in time. The magical elements are vivid, but it’s the emotional and thematic layers that make the story linger.

Beneath the enchantment lies a powerful undercurrent about restoration and responsibility. The vanished forest and lifeless desert aren’t just setting, they quietly explore the cost of what we often call “progress.” The message never feels forced or preachy. Instead, it grows organically from the narrative, inviting reflection while still delivering an entertaining, magical experience.

I haven’t read something that balances mythic whimsy with deeper allegory quite like this since and the Western Lands All That Really Matters series by Andrew Einspruch. There’s that same layered storytelling where magic carries meaning, and imagination reveals truth.

This story is enchanting, thoughtful, and deeply satisfying. A beautifully told tale of renewal, resistance, and hope. I received a copy of this through Book Funnel.
