Eat Drink and Get Buried - Well paced, engaging cozy

A cozy mystery steeped in New York energy, layered suspects, and the charm of the Village Blend coffee shop, Eat, Drink, and Get Buried blends urban suspense with the warmth of long-running characters. Though the opening felt a bit slow for me as a newcomer to the series, the story quickly picked up and held my interest with escalating danger, believable stakes, and characters I cared about within a well-crafted mystery.

About the Book

Clare Cosi is catering a rooftop party for Ava Welsh, her daughter Joy’s childhood friend, when a scream shatters the celebration. A woman is thrown from the balcony, and Ava’s boyfriend Ryan, who had planned to propose that night, flees the scene and becomes the prime suspect.

Clare is convinced he’s innocent, but the evidence keeps stacking up. When someone tries to run Ryan down with a car and a second murder occurs at the Village Blend, Clare digs deeper into a past trauma Ava and Joy barely survived as teens. The truth is buried beneath old secrets, new motives, and a killer determined to silence anyone who gets too close.

BookHookUp Review

The story begins with a slower, character-heavy setup, understandable for book 22 of a long-running series, but once the danger strikes, the pacing tightens and the mystery becomes fully engaging. The moment someone tries to run Ryan down is where the book truly takes off, and from there the tension stays steady.

Coyle captures New York’s urban energy beautifully. The rooftop party, the Village Blend, and the surrounding city feel vivid and believable without overwhelming the reader. The suspects are well crafted, each with motives that make sense, and I didn’t see the resolution coming until the end, always a cozy mystery win.

Clare is a grounded, capable heroine, and even as a first-time reader of the series, I found her easy to connect with. Ava and Ryan’s emotional stakes added depth, and I genuinely cared about what they were going through. Ryan’s decision to run made him look guilty, but Clare’s instincts, and the clues she uncovers, point in a different direction.

The coffeehouse elements add charm and a unique storytelling flavor. Recipes, drinks, and Village Blend culture enrich the mystery rather than distract from it.

Content-wise, there is one scene where sex is implied (Clare and her boyfriend lying in bed afterward), but nothing graphic is described.

A well-paced, engaging cozy with a satisfying conclusion and strong character appeal.

BookHookup Content Note

Clean fiction with one implied, non-graphic sex scene. Light violence typical of cozy mysteries. No graphic content or strong language.
