About the Book: Ghostspeaker Chronicles Books 1-3
Johanna’s life is upended during the King’s ball when the Fire Wizard invades her city. Forced to flee with her cursed friend Loesie and her loyal maid Nellie, they escape upriver on her father’s merchant ship. Along the way, they rescue Prince Roald, who becomes both ally and, eventually, her future husband. Together, the small group faces magical dangers, political intrigue, and personal challenges as they struggle to survive and protect their people.
The story blends fantasy and magical realism seamlessly, featuring witches, curses, elemental magic, and unique magical traditions. From the chaotic city streets to perilous forests and treacherous waters, the setting comes alive in every page.
BookHookup Review: Ghostspeaker Chronicles Books 1-3
The mix of personalities in Ghostspeaker Chronicles is part of what makes this story shine. Nellie, Johanna’s maid, is very “by-the-book,” concerned with what is proper and expected, while Johanna herself begins as anything but—independent, practical, and unconcerned with appearances (even wearing clogs to church!). Johanna’s friend Loesie, a farm girl with magic, has been cursed, adding urgency and risk as Johanna tries to help her along the journey. Add to the mix, the new king many call "the idiot King" because he is socially inept, but gifted in other ways. The group must learn to work together while living together on Johanna’s father’s boat, as they navigate danger, magic, and interpersonal tensions, creating both conflict and camaraderie.
That dynamic shifts as the story progresses. After marrying Prince Roald—who becomes king following the invasion—Johanna is forced to walk a fine line. With enemies at every turn, she must do what is necessary to survive and protect her people while also presenting herself as royal material. That tension between who she is and who she must appear to be adds depth to her character and makes her growth one of the most compelling elements of the series.
The worldbuilding is rich and imaginative, the magic system unique, and the story keeps readers engaged with unpredictability, stakes, and tension. Book 3 of this the omnibus could benefit from gentle editing (misspellings, wrong names used), the overall experience is captivating. Johanna’s journey, Loesie’s curse, and the political and magical threats create a page-turning adventure that fantasy lovers will enjoy. I'm ready for Ghostspeaker Chronicles (Books 4-6)!
