Halfskin: A Technoshriller — A Sci-fi thriller filled with bio-tech suspense

What if the technology that saved your life eventually made society decide you were no longer human?

Halfskin by Tony Bertauski pulls readers into that question almost immediately, building a suspense-filled techno thriller around identity, survival, and the terrifying consequences of advanced biotechnology.

About the Book: Halfskin (#1)

Biomites are artificial stem cells capable of replacing damaged cells throughout the human body. Disease disappears. Injuries once thought impossible to heal can now be repaired. Humanity becomes stronger, smarter, healthier, and more beautiful.

But there’s a limit.

Under the Halfskin Laws, anyone whose body becomes more than 50% biomites is no longer legally considered human. Those classified as “Halfskins” lose all rights and face mandatory deactivation.

Nix Richards survived a devastating car accident as a child because of biomites. Years later, the same technology that saved his life now threatens to destroy it.

Raised by his older sister Cali after their parents’ deaths, Nix must keep his growing secret hidden while the government closes in and reality itself begins to feel unstable.

Book Hookup Review: Halfskin

It didn’t take long for Halfskin to pull me in. Early on, there’s a moment where Nix cuts his finger and immediately panics because he doesn’t want anyone discovering his secret. That tension hooks the story almost immediately.

As the story develops, the details surrounding biomites and Nix’s condition unfold gradually, but the core idea driving the suspense is incredibly compelling: biomites don’t just heal; they multiply. Once a person’s biomite count crosses the fifty percent threshold, they are no longer considered human under the law. They become a Halfskin.

That concept alone creates an unsettling layer underneath everything happening in the story. Every injury, every discovery, every test suddenly matters.

This turned into a book I genuinely didn’t want to put down. The suspense builds steadily, and the techno thriller elements work really well because the science feels believable within the world the author creates. The explanations behind the biomites and the abilities they give people made the story feel unpredictable in a good way because you’re never entirely sure what might happen next.

The world building is also well done. The technology feels integrated into society rather than existing simply for plot convenience, which helps ground the story despite the futuristic premise.

There were a few moments where I felt slightly confused, but not enough to pull me out of the story or lessen the tension. The suspense and overall concept carried the story strongly all the way through.

Overall, Halfskin delivers a suspenseful sci-fi thriller with strong world building, an engaging premise, and enough unpredictability to keep the pages turning.
