Deadly Ruse: A World War II Mystery - Emotionally gripping and clever

Deadly Ruse: A World War II Mystery (Deadly Series) by Kate Parker  pulled me in from the first chapter and never let go. Kate Parker blends espionage, moral tension, and classic whodunnit mystery into a slow‑burn story that’s as emotionally gripping as it is clever. I loved this book and genuinely didn’t want to put it down.

Deadly Ruse

About the Book

British spy Olivia Redmond is summoned back into service, but instead of a dangerous field assignment, she’s ordered to teach drawing to captured German generals at Trent Park House, a genteel estate secretly wired for sound. Every polite conversation is a potential intelligence breakthrough.

Among the prisoners is Oberst Bernhard, a German officer from Livvy’s past, a man who once helped her save Jewish lives, and who now may need her help in return. When murder, stolen jewels, and whispered conspiracies erupt within the mansion, Livvy must navigate a maze of loyalty, lies, and danger to uncover the truth.

Book Review

What makes this story shine is Olivia Redmond herself. Her courage is rooted in doing what’s right, even when it doesn’t align perfectly with Britain’s wartime agenda. She’s intelligent and observant, but also trusting in ways that make her vulnerable, and that vulnerability makes her deeply human. Her struggle to leave her toddler son for two days each week adds emotional weight that grounds the entire narrative.

The pacing is a steady, simmering slow burn — the kind that keeps you guessing about who can be trusted. A murdered batman, a stabbing victim Livvy barely saves, and an attack on a friend all weave together into a classic whodunnit wrapped in espionage tension.

Trent Park House is a brilliant setting: a refined mansion masking danger, civility layered over secrets, and a fenced yard where whispered conversations escape the reach of hidden microphones. The scenes between Livvy and Oberst Bernhard, a likeable yet dangerous German officer who is decidedly not a Nazi, are some of the most compelling in the book. Their shared history and moral complexity elevate the story beyond a standard mystery.

Deadly Ruse is atmospheric, thoughtful, and quietly intense. If you love historical mysteries with heart, intelligence, and layered character dynamics, this one deserves a spot at the top of your list.

Content Note

Murder, wartime espionage, mild violence, moral ambiguity, and references to Jewish persecution without gratuitous details and handled sensitively.

Author Kate Parker

About the Author

Kate Parker has long wanted to build a time travel machine. However, after several false starts, she gave up and created time travel by going back in time inside her  books. Since she’s fond of murder mysteries, it is probably best that all of her travel is inside books or police from various ages would be hunting her. When not recreating old time buildings and fashions, she can be found with a modern computer and modern air conditioning in North Carolina with her daughter and a 115 lb. puppy who could just crash through any time barrier.
