A cozy mystery that opens with a shock, builds with humor, and ends with a satisfying twist. The Book Club is a delightful short read that blends lighthearted charm with a genuinely intriguing premise. Terry Toler has a gift for slipping humor into tense moments, and this little novella showcases that talent beautifully.
About the Book
The Books & Bangs reading club meets once a month to chat about murder mysteries, but this time, they stumble into one of their own. When their founder, Vera Rogers, doesn’t show up, the ladies assume she’s running late. A few phone calls later, they’re stunned to learn she has supposedly passed away.
But nothing prepares them for what they find at the funeral home: the woman in the casket is not Vera.
What begins as confusion quickly spirals into a real-life mystery, and Julia Ford, wife of Chicago homicide detective Cliff Ford, becomes the steady, determined center of the chaos. While the other women initially shrug and wonder what they can realistically do, Julia simply can’t let it go. Her persistence pulls the entire group into action, especially once they race to the graveside to stop the wrong woman from being buried in their friend’s plot.
Book HookUp Review
The Book Club is a charming blend of humor, heart, and mystery. Toler’s ability to inject levity into serious moments keeps the tone warm and engaging, even as the stakes rise. The older women of the Books & Bangs club are a joy, quirky, loyal, and wonderfully human. Their reactions feel authentic, from initial disbelief to full‑on determination once Julia nudges them past hesitation.
Julia Ford deserves special mention. Even in this short novella, she stands out as the emotional and moral anchor. Her instincts, compassion, and refusal to accept easy answers give the narrative its momentum. For readers new to the Cliff Ford series (like me), she’s an inviting entry point.
The pacing is brisk, the twists are fun, and the casket reveal is a fantastic hook. It’s unpredictable in the best way; the kind of cozy mystery that keeps you smiling while you turn the pages.
A clean, entertaining, and memorable short read for fans of cozy mysteries with humor and heart.
