Epic fantasy fans, take note — The Shape of Power by Dan F. Swinnen delivers a gritty, immersive world filled with danger, rebellion, and characters who stay with you long after the final page. This is the kind of story that starts with a spark and grows into a full blaze, pulling you deeper with every chapter.

The Shape of Power

About the Book

"In one year, the Empire will hang Brina's father. She won't let them."

Brina Springtide has survived alone for ten years, ever since her father’s assassination of the empire’s divine ruler shattered her family and plunged the realm into chaos. Powerless against the empire’s crushing grip, she scrapes by, until she discovers a mysterious artifact buried in an abandoned mine.

The artifact awakens in her hands, revealing hidden sparkgazer powers she can’t yet control. Suddenly thrust into a shadow world of banned magic, rebellion, and danger, Brina finds herself surrounded by the very sorcerers the empire vowed to destroy. Inspired by her father’s legacy, these sparkgazers have been conspiring to tear down the empire piece by piece.

Their first mission: break her father out of the infamous prison known as God’s Maul.

Between its blackened walls and labyrinthine passages, Brina’s father counts his final days. She might get in, but getting out is another matter entirely.

Book Hookup Book Review: The Shape of Power

Brina is the kind of heroine epic fantasy thrives on — tough, flawed, determined, and carrying a soft side she rarely shows. With no family left other than her imprisoned father, and a decade of surviving on her own, her emotional drive to free her father becomes the beating heart of the story. Her sparkgazer abilities are unpredictable, sometimes failing her at the worst moments, which makes her growth compelling and real.

Acheron, an old sparkgazer with a haunted past, is another standout. He’s complex, morally gray, and not always easy to agree with, yet impossible not to care about. The band of unlikely allies that forms around Brina adds richness to the narrative, giving the story the sprawling cast readers expect from epic fantasy.

The Shape of Power's plot hooks hard when Brina’s artifact awakens in a moment of crisis; a burst of power she doesn’t understand and can’t control. From that point on, the tension rises steadily. The pacing is epic and consistent, with surprises woven in that keep the story moving and fresh without ever feeling rushed.

The magic system is original and layered, with sparkgazers possessing varying levels of power. The Empire's Church/political system uses oppressive abilities that make them easy to dislike, adding a sharp edge to the political conflict. And God’s Maul, built up with dread long before Brina reaches it, absolutely lives up to its terrifying reputation. Once inside, the atmosphere becomes claustrophobic, dangerous, and unforgettable.

The world is immersive and gritty, the action well‑balanced with character development, and the ending is both satisfying and clearly poised to lead into the next book. By the final chapter, I wanted more.

Book HookUp Content Note

For my fans who visit looking for clean fiction, this one has elements you may want to avoid. The violence is moderate to intense, but not gratuitous. Gore is present, but not over the top. Includes some profanity but not heavy. No sexual content. Includes dark themes: Imprisonment, torture, oppression (handled with restraint). Think PG13.
