Amanda Cadabra and The Twilight Toxin blends cozy mystery, British urban fantasy, and a dash of adventure into a story filled with secrets, magic, and slow‑burn emotional tension. As a newcomer to Holly Bell’s long‑running series, I found myself drawn in by the characters, the Cornish atmosphere, and the clever, unpredictable plot.
About the Book: Amanda Cadabra and The Twilight Toxin
When a body is discovered under troubling circumstances, covert witch Amanda Cadabra and her prickly, loyal feline familiar are pulled back to the Cornish land of her birth. Detective Inspector Thomas Trelawney soon joins her, determined to solve the case by ordinary means—though nothing about this mystery is ordinary.
An unknown weapon, a killer hiding in plain sight, and a dangerous magical barrier force Amanda and Trelawney into an unexpected partnership… one that requires them to pose as something far more intimate than colleagues. As ancient secrets surface and a perilous gathering draws near, Amanda must decide how far she’s willing to go, and what she’s willing to risk to stop a murderer.
BookHookup Review: Amanda Cadabra and The Twilight Toxin
This was my first Holly Bell novel, and even though it’s the ninth in the series, I found it surprisingly accessible. It’s clear that long‑time readers will catch deeper layers of history, but there was enough context for me to follow the relationships and the magical world without confusion.
Amanda and Trelawney were the standout characters for me. Their dynamic is warm, understated, and threaded with the kind of unspoken affection that makes a reader lean in. They care for each other, obviously, but neither admits it, and that tension adds richness to every scene they share. Their forced “marriage” to bypass magical protections was one of my favorite elements, both plot‑wise and emotionally.
The plot itself is creative, unpredictable, and full of surprises. I won’t spoil anything, but the ladder scene was a highlight—clever, tense, and delightfully unexpected. The mystery is layered with ancient secrets, magical complications, and a murder that demands both logic and intuition to unravel.
The story moves through several locations, and while the cast is large, the included maps help keep everything straight. The Cornish backdrop is atmospheric and perfectly suited to a magical mystery—moody, windswept, and full of history.
One stylistic quirk did distract me: the frequent use of “um” in dialogue. Not just by one character, but by many. It made the voices feel less distinct, even though the characters themselves are unique. It’s a small thing, but noticeable.
Overall, Amanda Cadabra and the Twilight Toxin left me satisfied. There were moments when my attention drifted, but the humor, the relationships, and the natural integration of magic always pulled me back in. It’s a cozy, clever mystery with heart and a world I’d happily revisit.

BookHookup Content Note
Clean, cozy fiction. Contains a murder and some mild violence, but nothing graphic. Magical peril and tension are present but handled with restraint. Humor and warmth balance the darker elements.

About the Author: Holly Bell
Cat adorer and chocolate lover, British author Holly Bell’s life changed in a day. A best-selling author friend convinced Holly that she could write cozy mysteries, after many years’ experience with non-fiction, photography and video making.
Holly devoured all of the Agatha Christie books long before she knew that Miss Marple was the godmother of the Cozy Mystery. Her love of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings meant that her first literary creation in this area would have to be a cosy paranormal. Over the series the books have grown to straddle urban fantasy mystery too.
Having derived immense delight from the adventure of writing Amanda Cadabra and The Hidey-Hole and its 8 sequels, and a prequel to date, Holly has more in the pipeline.
Her favorite feline is a black cat called Bobby. He is black. Like her favorite hat. Purely coincidental.
Holly loves to hear from readers. She always responds in person.
