About the Book

Orphaned teen Sarah is trying to survive her temporary foster home, where her guardian’s granddaughter Margaret has made life miserable. Her one comfort is Shadow, her ghost‑seeing Doberman. When Sarah brings Shadow to school for an art project, she glimpses the ghost of a toddler boy, a moment that sparks an obsession she can’t shake.

Despite warnings to forget what she saw, Sarah pushes forward, determined to uncover the child’s identity. But her investigation draws the attention of the killer who silenced him. With Halloween approaching and danger closing in, Sarah must navigate school drama, foster‑home tension, and a past murder thread that still threatens her life.

Book Review

This was an easy, engaging read that held my interest from start to finish. The paranormal element is fresh — the idea that Sarah must place her fingers between Shadow’s eyes to see ghosts adds both tension and tenderness. The seizure risk is handled sensitively, reinforcing Sarah’s deep love for her dog. Shadow herself is a standout character, written with authentic canine behavior and emotional presence.

The teen POV is well done, capturing Sarah’s determination, vulnerability, and grief. While some aspects of her foster‑home situation felt a bit unbelievable, particularly her guardian’s obliviousness to Margaret’s behavior, the emotional beats still worked. Margaret’s “Mean Girl” antagonism is exaggerated but effective, adding friction without overshadowing the main mystery.

The ghost toddler storyline is compelling, though the uniform reactions from adults when Sarah tries to learn more felt slightly unrealistic. Still, the mystery unfolds with solid pacing, and the Halloween‑night climax is intense, pulling together every character I suspected but couldn’t quite pin down. The ending is satisfying and closes the story well.

A major thread involving evidence from a previous murder case adds depth and danger, giving Sarah leverage over a threatening adult and tying the book into the broader series.

Overall, this is a clean, suspenseful YA read with heart, mystery, and a memorable Doberman at its center.
