Set in the idyllic Cotswold countryside during the hottest summer in decades, Who Pays the Piper? delivers a layered mystery where wealth, power, and hidden agendas collide. When a young man is found floating in the river, Detective Sergeant Mark Mulroney steps into a case that grows more tangled with every chapter.
About the Book
The victim’s identity is unknown; his only distinguishing mark a small tattoo on his wrist. Was it suicide, a tragic accident, or something far more sinister?
Mulroney’s investigation leads him to a nearby eco‑commune funded by a wealthy aristocrat who insists the young man had gone to visit family. But others tell a different story. Miranda claims she’s expecting his child. Jake, his closest friend, insists suicide was never on Sab’s mind. And the vicar of a neighboring parish fears one of her congregants is trapped in a dangerous domestic situation.
As Mulroney uncovers clues—a burned‑out car, an unidentified body, and inconsistencies surrounding the commune, he begins to suspect ties to organized crime and a luxury private hotel. In a world where rich men and women call the tune, truth becomes a dangerous thing… because they are the ones who pay the piper.
BookHookup Book Review: Who Pays the Piper
Who Pays the Piper? opens with the discovery of a dead body, and several interwoven narratives. At first, I found myself waiting for the emotional anchor that would make me care about the characters. With so many threads introduced early, the shifts in viewpoint felt more like interruptions than connections.
But once Jake and Miranda began to suspect Sab was missing—and their trust in Cosimo started to crumble—the story clicked into place. Jake’s growing unease became the emotional center I needed. His suspicions acted like a spark that illuminated the other narratives, revealing how tightly they were all connected and how dangerous thing were.
Detective Mark Mulroney’s chapters were the strongest throughout. His steady uncovering of key details; the burned‑out car, the unidentified body, the inconsistencies surrounding the commune all created the backbone of the mystery. And once Jake’s fears aligned with Mulroney’s discoveries, the story transformed from a collection of threads into a compelling, cohesive whodunit.
From that point on, I didn’t want to put the book down. I kept wondering: Is the burned‑out car tied to the victim? If so, who’s responsible? Pam Keevil offers a wide range of suspects, and the tension builds as each narrative reveals its part in the larger truth.
Although this is Book Two in the series, it stands completely on its own. The inverted‑detective format, establishing the crime before the mystery unfolds, was a unique and engaging hook that kept me reading even before I felt fully connected to the characters.
A thoughtful, clean mystery with mild profanity, no on‑page sex, and violence handled without graphic detail. Perfect for readers who enjoy slow‑building intrigue and interconnected storylines.
