Highly entertaining unpredictable noir thriller

Malibu Burns by Mark Richardson delivers neo noir crime fiction characterized by cynicism, fatalism, and moral ambiguity. It takes place in near-future San Francisco where teen Malibu Makimura stands at the cusp of a life changed forever when she realizes she can sense her father’s thoughts. He leaves his family to pursue his “gifts” and research. Soon after, her mother takes her life leaving Malibu an orphan. The plot follows the journey of this young woman as she tries to survive in a dark world where dimensions overlap and reality is a variable. She discovers she can feel people’s emotions but it does little to help keep a roof over her head.

She finds a place to live in the seedy part of town and lands a job drawing caricatures at a women’s nightclub while trying to ignore a portentous black-hearted voice growing inside her. One night, while creating a caricature she senses a sinister emotion projected by an older, well-put-together woman dressed in a leopard print dress. She learns the woman’s name is Luciana and is warned to steer clear of her by the bartender, but when she is invited to the woman’s Presidio Heights mansion she decides to go. The woman offers Malibu a peculiar criminal opportunity, the girl accepts and the evil inside her grows. Malibu thinks she can control it, but soon finds herself wondering if she will ever be in control of her life again! And on a base level, she is not sure she wants to be.

Malibu Burns Book Review

Richardson sets the grim, gritty, and matter-of-fact tone in the first few pages and does an impressive job with his dystopian worldbuilding. The backdrop is futuristic, fantastically surreal, realistic enough to believe and at times horror-worthy. It makes sense like a bad dream that scares you but you want to still know what happens. This tactic works well with Malibu’s mental state as she juggles her allegiance to the authoritative Luciana with her own better judgement, while the sinister voice grows more frequent and dominant.

Malibu Burns is a highly entertaining noir thriller like few others with excellent pacing, an unpredictable story, with complex characters. I recommend this book to people who enjoy the sinister feel of the noir crime genre. Think of The Arrangement by Robyn Harding. Fast-moving engrossing read, though it did take me a few chapters to get into the mind-bending direction of overlapping dimensions and changing realities, but then I was hooked. My one word of caution is that there is explicit sexual content sprinkled here and there that is necessary to the development of the story.

Tangle of Choices - Perfect fantasy read for the beach, on a rainy day, or on a plane

This drama/fantasy centers around difficult choices and their consequences. The plot centers around a strong female protagonist, Tauria, and her husband, Prince Doron. For those who had the privilege of reading book one in this series, Neglected Merge, the story picks up in Tangle of Choices seven years later. At the start of this tale, Tauria’s marriage appears to fall into the happily-ever-after category until she makes a sacrificial offer in order to broker peace between the world she came from and the world she now calls home. The far-reaching consequences of that choice affect not just herself but everyone she cares about.

I won’t say more about the exact plot because I certainly don’t want to be a spoiler for this well-written fantasy. The worldbuilding is vivid and polished, and the characters are relatable. While Author Eve Koguce's cast of characters is extensive, they are individually distinct, motivated, and flawed behaviors that evolve from their backstory. It all works together to create a rich tapestry of fantasy culture that makes sense.

In this second book of the three-book NegligentMerge series, Tauria meets real adversity head-on as she strives to bring peace to her world. Her unselfish decision carries her into a foreboding scenario that threatens all she holds precious, including her marriage. The consequences affect her emotional, psychological, and social well-being as she gives up everything to be a responsible and thoughtful leader.

Review of Tangle of Choices

If I had to sum up this book in one word, I’d call it satisfying. It's a perfect read for the beach, on a rainy day, or on a plane. I enjoyed it on every level. Characters I cared about with clearly defined roles, a believable plot, plenty of drama, a well-crafted fantasy world, and a healthy dose of clean romance. Because I read book 1, it felt like I was reconnecting with friends. However, the book can stand alone without reading book one, although I highly recommend reading both. I’m happy to award this book 5 stars, and I look forward to book 3, Shifting Directions: A Fantasy Drama with Thriller Elements (Neglected Merge Book 3). I recommend this book to fans of epic fantasy adventures like The Entangled Princess: A Clean Medieval Romance (The Bitter Kingdoms series Book 1) by Shantal Sessions, or the Shadowlands King by Amy Horikami.

Astounding YA Dark Fantasy whodunit

Slipstream is a YA Sci-fi/Dark Fantasy thriller that opens with a gruesome murder of a young pregnant Asian heiress. When the authorities arrive, they find her sliced open and the baby gone. A necklace retrieved from the body turns out to be a high-tech amulet. The eccentric engraver who crafted it was a founding member of the defunct Pacific Rim Rapturits. It turns out the dead woman is his daughter and the half-sister of Detective Connor, who is working the case. Years pass with no breaks in the case until Connor learns that the baby lived, and her name is Raven.

Alice Godwin uses Dark Fantasy as the canvas on which she paints this fantasy whodunit with the flare of a noir thriller. The opening chapter delivers just enough backstory to generate questions that frame the plot that unfolds in fractured pieces from varying points of view that fit together like a Japanese puzzle box.

When the reader meets Raven, she is 16, lives in a post-apoplectic high-tech world where ecopods drive below the streets through a cobweb of underground freeways and some live in eco-tech housing and artificial closed ecological systems. Yet, Raven's world still suffers from inequality and injustice as power and wealth control lives and enrich the already-rich minority.

Raven isn’t among the rich. She’s a gifted young lady with remote viewing skills, being reared by the carnies. Her visions fill her with dread, but she finds solace in a place called the Ghostlands where the whisperings of the web and electromagnetic humming that surround everything no longer haunt her. Here her head is silent. Here she enters a free-fall state into silver streams where things are tranquil and perfect–until Ceriful, a being from another reality crosses boundaries and brings the slipstream in his wake. Raven’s essence flows into it. He needs Raven to restore his realm. But, if she does, what does it mean for her world?

Book Recommendation

I recommend this book to those looking for their next fantasy mystery read. Filled with suspense, foreshadowing, and flashbacks, it delivers a surprise ending. Whether you’re interested in cozies or noir fiction, I’m sure this magical mystery will glue you to the edge of your seat. The opening chapters had a disjointed feel as scenes jumped to differing points of view and made for a slow start, but I realized those early chapters laid the foundation I needed to unlock the puzzle of this dark fantasy mystery. People who enjoy books like Beyond the Black Door by A.M. Stickland will find this book to their liking. I give it four stars and look forward to book 2.

About the Author Alice Godwin

Raised in the most southern of Australian cities, Hobart (Nipaluna), capital of the heart-shaped island of Tasmania (Lutruwita), gateway to the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. Impacted by the mystical land of her childhood, Alice can recall days of climbing through Eden-like forests and around glacial waterfalls, where mystical ravens and colorful parrots flew through the Antarctic Beech forests, adding to her sense of wonder in the world around her.

Her family were European exiles from various countries from Turkey to Lithuania. She is the first mother in four generations to give birth to her children in the same country she was born in. Her first job was in the Editorial Library of The Mercury newspaper in Hobart before joining the chaotic, colourful world of fashion in a design studio off Chapel Street in South Yarra, Melbourne. Eventually she headed further north to Sydney and some interesting years working at the Museum of Contemporary Art situated between the iconic Harbour Bridge and the Opera House on Circular Quay.

Around this time she began writing and her first short story was shortlisted in the Northern Territory awards and printed in their anthology ‘Extra-Territorial’ and so she continued, stopping briefly for a few years when her two sons took her on other adventures. She has had forty short stories published in magazines, anthologies, and literary journals in Australia, USA and UK. She won the Australian Horror Writers Assoc short story of the year (2008), Wyvern Publications UK YA short story competition and has been shortlisted for the Irish Aeon Award.
