Maximize Your Medicare a primer for retirement or open enrollment

Maximize Your Medicare by Jae W. Oh is a comprehensive overview that cuts through the confusion surrounding Medicare benefits and choices. Chapters start by listing “Truths and Myths” as it unravels common misconceptions and addresses misinformation as it systematically provides an understanding of current federal regulations and the benefits available. It goes on to examine secondary coverage options including Medicare Part D (drug coverage), and warns how delaying enrollment can be a costly mistake over time. The author even points out how procrastination in making your Medicare decision can be a costly mistake leaving you enrolled in Original Medicare without the optional Part B which pays for services that Part A doesn’t cover such as doctors' services, outpatient care, and other necessary medical services not covered under Part A. If you don’t have Part B, that money comes out of your pocket.

I can’t begin to condense all this book has to offer, but I can tell you the author does a good job unraveling a complicated topic in a down-to-earth manner. He offers a common-sense approach for how to investigate insurance-based solutions involving long-term and short-term care and pinpoints specifics to be aware of regarding short term-convalescent care and long-term care insurance. And one more thing I found really helpful is the glossary listing all the initialisms and acronyms of terms such as ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) and what they are: eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring (walking), and continence. Along with definitions, most listings include details regarding what you need to know about related coverage. For instance, for ADLs “Long-term care insurance may cover a patient if it is documented that he/she cannot conduct three ADLs.”

Maximize Your Medicare warns that “one should not assume anything.” You need to educate yourself in order to make the best choice for your situation. It points to resources for more information and walks readers through the complications of the American Rescue Plan Act, as well as the many facets of retirement health benefits, including VA benefits eligibility and cost-sharing. Information contained in this book may surprise some and overwhelm others, but it is necessary if you want to make educated choices when it comes to your Medicare health coverage. I recommend this book to anyone approaching retirement age. I also recommend it to those already on Medicare to help them know what to do when Open Enrollment comes around because the current information offered in this book provides key takeaways to help the savvy consumer make decisions regarding which Medicare plans are right for them and why. I give this book a solid 5 stars.

The Crown Plonked Queen a funny entertaining read with plenty of drama

The Crown Plonked Queen: A Humorous Fantasy Novel (The Western Lands and All That Really Matters Book 4) by Andrew Einspruch picks up where The Light Bearer (Book #3) left off. Young princess Eloise has recently returned from her journey to rescue her twin sister, Princess Joanna. She still wears the cast on her arm, her once-dark hair is white after her Purple Haze experience, and she sports a very short hairstyle after hacking her hair off when it became coated in blood. But none of those things are her real challenge--her mother's death is her number one concern. Not only did she die. She was murdered, and as heir to the throne, Eloise must fill her shoes.

Crown Plonked Queen

As a teen queen, she must prove herself, but it doesn’t start out well. As she tries to learn the ropes, she is faced with daunting tasks on every side and it doesn’t take long for her to suspect some may be working against her, including her First Advisor Leccino Ligurian. Is he for her or not?

When threats on her own life become real, she surrounds herself with some of her most-trusted friends including Jerome Abernathy her lifelong chipmunk friend, her loyal guard Lorch Lacksneck, and a couple of the royal horses who traveled with her across the kingdoms when she rescued her sister. Together, they seek to get to the bottom of the truth of who killed the Queen, and as they work on it, they have to sort out who can be trusted. With all this going on, Eloise wonders about magic and its role. Did her ancestor use it? And what about the Star of Whatever? Can she tap into that someway?

The Crown Plonked Queen is a delightful read on more that one level. If I had to sum it up in one word, I'd say "satisfying." The story is an entertaining fantasy, filled with subtle humor, well-defined quirky characters, plenty of drama, hints of a budding romance slowly percolating, and a mystery or two to solve with a who-dun-it trail of breadcrumbs. I give The Crown Plunked Queen five stars and recommend it to people who enjoy a good story, a laugh, and believe in magic. The only thing I didn’t like about it was that it ended and I am now waiting for the next book in the series to come out. If you haven’t read the series, check it out.

Rayna's Sacrifice action-packed page-turner

Rayna’s Secret is book 3 in the Katori Chronicles. This coming-of-age tome is YA fantasy at its best as Prince Kai approaches his 17th birthday. As heir to the throne of Diu, he faces several big decisions. He and the love of his life, Rayna, feel the symptoms of their Katori blood burning within their veins. It is time to head to Katori to participate in the Conhaspriga, or their  Katori powers will burn out and be lost forever; powers Kai needs to save his mother.

Rayna's Sacrifice

With Rayna at his side, Kai steps away from palace life in Diu, and they head for Katori to take part in the Conhaspriga--a coming-of-age test to get into Katori. The test grows into a battle against Katori Guardians working against his every move to enter because they fear he is like his biological father, Keegan.

Kai and Rayna grow in their Katori powers. Inspiration from Alenga and his desire to save his mother spurs Kai on. Through visions, he knows she is alive but trapped in her beastmaster form. But not everyone is eager to save his mother.

Kai and Rayna work together throughout this quest. They come against one obstacle after another while learning to master their powers individually. The ever-changing circumstances force them to make difficult decisions, often at their own peril.

Rayna's Sacrifice is action-packed; a real page-turner. The Katori Chronicles realm offers wonder characters, and Lombardo's world-building skills are masterful. I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to fantasy enthusiasts who enjoy the Age of the Sorcerers book series by Morgan Rice. It is a fantastic journey for readers young and old.

About A.D. Lombardo

Angela Lombardo was born in Akron, Ohio, raised on a farm by her grandparents. Angela loves animals, the country life and is still a tomboy at heart. You can take her off the bobcat, but you’ll never get her to enjoy the city. She dabbled in playing the piano, sports and fishing.

Her love of comics started with Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. Being a Trekkie and a BMX rider, Angela did not have many girlfriends or time for makeup. She spent most of her time with her older brother crashing dirt bikes and three-wheelers. As a teenager, her grandmother sent her to Barbizon to teach her how to be a proper girl. She is fortunate she had a son.

Angela started writing The Half-Light in fall 2017 after a sleepless night gave her pause about the mother in a made-up story she created for her son. She spent the weekend solving the mystery of where the mother went.
